Biographical/Historical Information

Israel Jacob was a German Jewish banker and philanthropist. He was born April 14, 1729,in Halberstadt. He was court agent to the Duke of Brunswick and the Margrave of Baden. Owing to his efforts the Jews' body-tax was repealed in the state of Baden. He also took a prominent part in the conferences held in Berlin and Spandau relating to the apportioning of the Jews' tax among the Prussian communities. He died Nov. 25, 1803.

Benedict Heinrich Bendix was a graphic artist born to a German Jewish family in Berlin in 1768. He studied under Gottfried Daniel Berger and later taught drawing at several Jewish schools including the Jüdische Freischule Berlin, which was founded by his uncle David Friedländer. He made several portraits of prominent German Jews, including Moses Mendelssohn. He comitted suicide on January 3, 1828. His nephew was the painter Eduard Bendemann, a prominent member of the Düsseldorf school of painting.
