Jacques Schiffrin & Cie.

Jacques Schiffrin founded Jacques Schiffrin & Cie. in New York after his arrival in 1941. He published works of the French Resistance. The French book trade was highly competitive, and Schiffrin had to borrow money for his publishing ventures. He subsequently joined Kurt Wolff's Pantheon Books as a partner in 1942.

Schiffrin had first gained publishing experience when he founded Schiffrin & Co. in Paris in 1923. He became famous for the Bibliothèque de la Pléiade, a critical and annotated series of complete works of classic authors in pocket format. After the Nazis invaded France, he and his family managed to flee to Casablanca and Lisbon, arriving in New York in August 1941.
