Robert Freund founded the Twin Editions/ Twin Prints in New York after his arrival in June 1941. After his death in 1952, his wife Grete managed the business. She died a few months later, precipitating the purchase of the company by the New York Graphic Society.
Freund had worked in the publishing business since 1926, when he was co-owner of the Piper Verlag. He handled the publication of international literature for Piper. He was forced out of the Piper Verlag after the imposition of the Nuremberg Laws.
Freund, along with Paul Maric-Mariendol and Rudolf Lichy, founded the Bastei Verlag in Vienna in October 1936. The business only survived a few months. After the Anschluss, Freund fled to Switzerland, where he sold portions of his stocks and publishing rights to the Raschler Verlag.
