On November 3, 2024, the Leo Baeck Institute - New York | Berlin is organizing a one-day symposium entitled “Macht und Ohnmacht - Von Machtlosigkeit, Resilienz und Selbstermächtigung”.
Under the leitmotif “When everything is taken from you - what then?”, inspired by the podcast EXIL, we would like to explore with you the complex experiences of powerlessness and disenfranchisement that Jewish refugees experienced in their countries of origin in Europe and in exile.
At the same time, we want to focus on the often overlooked examples of self-empowerment and resilience that these people have shown in times of great need.
We invite you to join us in reflecting on and discussing how individuals recognized, created or fought for room for manoeuvre despite seeming hopelessness. What role did private and institutional networks play in this? And how can these experiences be transferred to the present day?
