Hermann Loeb founded the Holbein Verlag AG after he arrived in Basel in 1933. He was assisted by the art collector Tobias Christ. Unlike most other Jewish émigrés, Loeb was able to join the Swiss bookseller association in 1936.
Loeb had earlier been active in the publishing industry in Germany. He was the owner of the Prestel Verlag, which published facsimile prints in cooperation with museums for wealthy collectors, researchers and universities.
