To commemorate 1,700 years of Jewish life in German-speaking lands, the Leo Baeck Institute New York | Berlin created two traveling exhibitions that are touring the federal and state parliaments in Germany in 2021 and 2022. While both exhibitions are based on the content of the Shared History Project, illuminating German-Jewish themes, stories and conflicts through various objects from the last 1,700 years, they differ in their presentation.
The glass and steel exhibition, which was commissioned by the German Bundestag and displayed there at the beginning of 2021, focuses on shared German-Jewish history through chronologically-arranged objects that provide insights into German-Jewish life in various eras. The compact exhibition, which consists of twelve panels arranged in a row, addresses "shared history" through introductory texts and thematic panels. Here, recurring motifs of German-Jewish life in German lands are presented and discussed in the context of objects from different epochs, which all speak to similar issues.
