Victor Hammer founded the Hammer Press in Aurora, New York, during the 1940s. He produced eighteen bibliophile editions, which he crafted, designed, cut and cast himself. He was a professor at Wells College and later founded the Wells College Press.
Hammer had studied art and architecture in Vienna. In 1922, he set up a printing press in Florence. In 1939, he fled Europe.
