Richard Friedenthal published his poetry collection Brot und Salz in 1943. He printed 600 copies, mostly at his own expense and with some help from friends. During this time, he also worked at the PEN-Zentrum deutschsprachiger Autoren im Ausland and at the BBC.
In Germany, he had been director of the publishing house Th. Knaur Nachf. since 1930. He fled to England in 1938.
