Biographical/Historical Information
The art dealer Paul Cassirer was born in Görlitz, Saxony in 1871. Together with his cousin Bruno Cassirer, they opened an art gallery in Berlin and became active in the Berlin Secession. Paul was also engaged in supporting Impressionist art, specifically the work of Vincent Van Gogh. Cassirer was married in a second marriage to the actress Tilla Durieux; he committed suicide during divorce procedures in 1926.
The portrait and landscape artist Leopold Kalkreuth was born in Düsseldorf in 1855. He studied in Munich and in Weimar, where he was mostly active. Leopold Kalkreuth was one of the founders of the Secession movement in Germany. He died in 1928.
