Biographical/Historical Information

The philosopher and theologian Hans Ehrenberg was born in Altona, Germany into a Jewish family (a cousin of Franz Rosenzweig) in 1883. He finished his studies in economics, law, political studies, and philosophy in Heidelberg in 1910, and one year later he converted to Christianity. He joined the Social Democratic Party and became a Protestant minister, co-founding the anti-Nazi “Confessing Church” in 1933. After being interned at the concentration camp in Sachsenhausen, he could emigrate to England, returning to Germany in 1947. Hans Ehrenberg died in Heidelberg in 1958.
