Biographical/Historical Information
Rabbi Joseph Carlebach (1883-1942) was the last chief rabbi of the Jewish community in Hamburg-Altona before and during the Holocaust. In 1942, he and his wife Lotte, née Preuss and four of their younger children were deported to Riga; only one son, Shlomo Carlebach survived.
