Biographical/Historical Information

The Indian Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore was born in 1861, son of Debendranath Tagore. He was the author of volumes of lyric verse in Bengali, often using settings and themes of the Bengali countryside. In 1901, Rabindranath Tagore established a school at Santiniketan, Bolpur, Bengal, which developed into Visva-Bharati University in 1924. Tagore was awarded the Nobel prize for literature in 1913; and in 1919 he resigned his knighthood in protest against repressive measures in Punjab. Rabindranath Tagore died in 1941.
