Biographical/Historical Information

Gustav Mahler, who was born in Bohemia in 1860, was a cherished Romantic composer and rose to become the most prominent conductor in his lifetime, heading orchestras in Vienna, Budapest, Hamburg, New York and other venues. As a Jew, he was obliged to convert to Catholicism before serving as director of the Wiener Hofoper (Vienna Court Opera) in 1897. Gustav Mahler died in Vienna in 1911.
