Biographical/Historical Information
The owner of this pin was George Garrington, who was a Boy Scout and Boy Scout leader in both England and in the United States. Georg Grünbaum (later George Garrington) was born in Berlin on August 1, 1923, the second son of Wally Grünbaum née Neumann (1901-circa 1943) and Erich Grünbaum (1889-1934). Wally Grünbaum and her mother Lea Neumann both perished in the Holocaust. With the help of Kindertransport, George left Berlin for England in November 1938, living with various organizations and private homes. From 1944 to 1948 he served with the British Army. After receiving a bachelor’s degree with majors in math and physics, he worked in the aircraft industry until 1954. George Garrington emigrated to the United States in 1954, continuing his long career in mechanical engineering, working in both the aerospace and commercial manufacturing industries. George Garrington died in California on February 18, 2014.
