All three branches of LBI gathered at the Jewish Museum Berlin to celebrate the 70th Anniversary
Last Tuesday, June 17, 2025, all three branches of the Leo Baeck Institute celebrated the 70th anniversary at the Jewish Museum Berlin. Also at the festivities were the friends and supporters of the LBI and the LBI's Scientific Working Group, with around 250 guests.
Dr. Doron Rabinovici gave a moving keynote speech, reminding us of the responsibility of remembrance and the opportunities of togetherness - “On the reality of yesterday and the possibility of tomorrow - on the Jewish in the German”. Attendees also heard greetings from Hetty Berg (Director of the Jewish Museum Berlin), State Secretary Bernd Krösser (BMI), and Prof. Dr. Michael Brenner (LBI's International President).
The evening featured music by students of the Barenboim-Said Akademie, who framed the evening with Schubert's Rosamunde Quartet. A reception followed the official part of the event, full of lively discussions and laughter - a moment of lived community in these difficult times.
Our friends and colleagues from the Leo Baeck Institute Jerusalem were unfortunately unable to attend in person due to the current situation in Israel - our thoughts were with them. Many of our colleagues from LBI London and LBI New York were also connected to us digitally. We hope to meet again in person soon and look forward to many more years together.
Our special thanks go to all contributors - and above all to guests such as Bodo Ramelow, Petra Pau, Felix Klein, Alan Meltzer, Thomas Krüger and our esteemed colleagues from the Austrian Cultural Forum, the U.S. American Embassy, the Jewish Museum Berlin, the Federal Agency for Civic Education, the Claims Conference, the Friends of Yad Vashem, the Exilmuseum and many others who enriched this evening with their presence.
A recording of the event with English subtitles is available on our YouTube.
The anniversary year is under the patronage of Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
We are grateful for the wide media interest in our anniversary. Below is a selection of articles and features covering the celebration and the history of the Leo Baeck Institute:
