In 2023, LBI's exhibit Unpacking Exile expanded on the stories from seasons 1 and 2 of our acclaimed podcast Exile. Each episode of the podcast uses materials from our archive to tell the story of a person forced to grapple with the loss of home, culture, language, security, or family due to Nazi persecution, and, in many cases, going on to change the world. In the companion exhibition, visitors were invited to explore the artifacts and documents in person. Now, online visitors can roam the gallery virtually and dive into these materials along with even more online and multimedia resources. Objects link to their sources, either in LBI's online archive or elsewhere, and offer supplemental materials such as YouTube videos, audio interviews, and articles.
To create this exhibit, we worked with Cura3D, a German-based company that develops digital exhibits for institutions around the world. Philipp Orschler, Managing Director of Cura3D, shares LBI's sentiments about the importance of accessibility in the museum world: "Digital solutions in the cultural sector lower barriers," he says, "this makes it possible to experience art and culture where previously more difficult."
