Joseph Roth (1894-1939) an Austrian novelist and journalist, whose work chronicles the decline of the Habsburg monarchy. After serving in the Austrian Army during World War I, Roth worked as a journalist for the Frankfurter Zeitung from 1923 to 1933. He fled Germany when Hitler came to power and settled in Paris, where he spent his last years living in poverty. He wrote fourteen novels, in addition to many newspaper articles and short stories. Only belatedly did he gain recognition as one of Austria's outstanding novelists. |
