Contrary to common belief, it was the French who first used tear gas against the Germans. The Germans developed poisonous chlorine gas that was first used in 1915 at the battle of Ypres. Chlorine gas destroys the respiratory organs and its use was condemned universally, even though the Allied forces soon thereafter retaliated in kind. Close to one hundred thousand soldiers on all sides died of various kinds of poison gas.
