Job Description

The accountant, a regular, part-time (20 hours per week), exempt position, under the direct supervision of the Director of Finance performs all general accounting duties following established procedures and policies. This position offers a great opportunity for an individual seeking work in a small non-profit. The accountant should have the ability to balance multiple tasks, maintain accurate records, reconcile, and run reports quickly, provide technical support, and work effectively with other staff in financial matters. The accountant would be responsible for monthly fiscal responsibilities and would report to the Director of Finance. The ideal candidate would be a dynamic and organized individual with the ability to work effectively with the director’s team to ensure timely and accurate reporting.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Conduct general accounting duties:
    • Cash Receipts (weekly cash log, deposit checks via remote deposit and cash at bank, when applicable),
    • Accounts Payable (invoices and payments),
    • Benefits (reconciliation and allocation of expenses),
    • Accounts Receivable (record receipts of cash, credit card payments and checks, including earned revenue and contributions)
    • Prepaids and accruals,
    • AP sub ledgers to general ledger reconciliations
  • Process payroll with Director of Finance.
  • Perform monthly closes.
    • Financial and bank reconciliations for NY and Berlin office.
    • Net Assets with and without donor's restrictions (Temporarily and Permanently Restricted), including monthly releases, Investments,
    • Reconcile balance sheet accounts.
    • adjustments to depreciation
  • Reporting:
    • Produce department budget to actual reports on a monthly basis and review with Directors.
    • Prepare cash flow projections and monitor cashflow.
    • With support from Director of Finance/Berlin Manager prepares grant reports/funder reports as needed.
  • Participates in audit preparation and submission of requested audit documentation.
  • Prepare 1099-MISC reporting for recipients and IRS.
  • Participate in special projects and ad-hoc analyses.
  • Support budget development process.
  • Partner with Director of Finance to improve policies, procedures and practices, with an eye toward internal controls, efficiency, and leveraging technology to improve fiscal operations.
  • Maintain finance files, storage, and organization.
  • Perform additional duties as requested.

Qualifications / Skills:

  • Degree or certificate in accounting highly desired. College courses through at least Intermediate Accounting highly desired.
  • CPA is preferred, but not required.
  • At least 5 years of experience in a similar role / similar job functions in a non-profit.
  • Experience with Blackbaud (Financial Edge, Raisers Edge), Paychex, or similar software preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly in Microsoft Excel.
  • Understanding of general accounting concepts.
  • Competency in preparing audit schedules, analyses, and variance explanations.
  • Ability to communicate in a clear, friendly, professional, and proactive manner.
  • Ability to multitask and meet deadlines.

Location: Hybrid - NYC/Remote

Salary: $35-45K Annually
