After more than 20 years as Executive Director and as International Director of LBI, Carol Kahn Strauss retired at the end of 2015. As Executive Director, she opened channels to the governments of the Federal Republic of Germany and other Central European nations, which became a major source of support for LBI. After becoming International Director in 2013, she laid the groundwork for increased activity by Leo Baeck Institute in Europe, especially in partnership with local Jewish institutions in Germany. Under her leadership, LBI also joined the American Jewish Historical Society, YIVO Institute for Jewish Research, the American Sephardi Federation, and Yeshiva University Museum as a founding partner of the Center for Jewish History, which provides access to LBI collections in a world-class facility.
